Parole Papers at Appomattox Court House

At the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park in Virginia, there was a display of the printing room.  After the surrender by General Lee of 28,000 confederate soldiers, they each got a freshly printed “parole paper”.  This was given to each soldier that gave up his arms so he could safely passage home. Lincoln and General Grant  decided to not shame and take each Confederate soldier prisoner, but to forgive and have them immediately become part of America again as long as they laid down their arms and went home in peace. Here the printing was done in one of the buildings for all these men.
