Years come and go and if people don’t travel to certain places they tend to forget the impressive memorials like the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Many might even forget the names of the four presidents carved into the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota,
Work on the memorial began in 1927 and it took fourteen years to complete. Well-known sculptor Gutzon Borglum worked on the design and 350 people worked to help it all become a reality. The four presidents whose faces are carved into the memorial are the 1st U.S. President George Washington. the 3rd U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, the 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, and the 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt.
While working on the Mount Rushmore Nationa Memorial dynamite was used to blast out rocks from the side of the mountain. Ove 90 per cent of the mountain was carved out by dynamite. The rest was done using air hammers. The faces of the presidents were done one by one as follows, Washington in 1930, Jefferson in 1936, Lincoln in 1937, and Roosevelt in 1939.
Today this is one of the most recognized and visited monuments in the U.S. and receives over 2.7 million visitors each year.
