Grosse Point Lighthouse (2017-08-04 14-38-41aa)

Grosse Point Lighthouse is located at 2601 Sheridan Road in Evanston, Illinois.

Lake Michigan near Evanston was a dangerous place for ships in the 19th century. After several major shipwrecks, including the Lady Elgin which cost more than 300 lives, the US government decided to build a lighthouse. Construction took place in 1873 and it went into service the following year.

In 1935 the federal government turned over control of everything but the tower and the light to the City of Evanston. It was decommissioned after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 because of the possibility of air raids. At this time the city received control over the tower and the light. The light was reignited in 1945 and serves as a secondary navigational aid. The surrounding area is now a park.

The photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera. I used Macphun’s Luminar for Windows (beta) to apply the ‘Detailed’ preset. Then I used ACDSee Ultimate 10.4 to adjust the lighting and boost the contrast and vibrance.
