Dating sites have become the scammer’s forte. They find someone who lives in their city, someone they can exploit.
They pretend to live in a distant city.
They have dozens of people they correspond with. They email, may even phone. They assume that photo isn’t of you, (either not you as you appear today or never was you) so assume video chats are unlikely.
They write a lot, ‘giving’ information to get information. In a short time they know where and when you are at work or the supermarket or church or otherwise out of the house.
They do the ‘spare key’ trick late in the discussions having already softened you up.
They are searching for the one who leaves a key under a mat, (or the back door unlocked). When they find that one, they hone in.
As they live ‘far away’ they are never suspected.
