Thanks for the memories Coach Red Miller (1927-2017)

One of my favorite football coaches in the National Football League Robert “Red” Miller passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89 years.

Miller was the head coach of the Denver Broncos from 1977-1980. Miller succeeded John Ralston as the head coach of the Broncos after the 1976 football season after he was an assistant coach with the New England Patriots.

Miller led the Broncos to their first Super Bowl berth in his rookie season in 1977. When Miller became the head coach of the Broncos he was able to sell to his team that they could overcome being the laughingstock of the National Football League to Super Bowl contenders during his short tenure as their head coach from 1977-1980.

Even though the Broncos lost to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XII in New Orleans by a final score of 27-10, in my opinion the 1977 Dallas Cowboys who had the best defense and offense that year could have beaten any team that competed against them that day in New Orleans.

Rest in peace Coach Miller, Broncos fans will owe a debt of gratitude that can be never be repaid as the head coach who created of the Orange Crush defense during his tenure.

  1. Me too since he was a cheerleader type of coach during his time with the Broncos from 1977-1980. Miller was the equal in some respects like former New Orleans Saints head coaches Jim Mora and current head coach Sean Payton in turning around a losing franchise into a winning team.
