Bundesliga highlights – 5/16/20

The German Bundesliga is now the first major professional soccer league to come back during the Covid-19 pandemic.  The new quarantine rules established have allowed for the entire world to watch some quality soccer today.

Since this year has been so crazy already, you would have to assume that there would be some upsets going down today.  The first upset came from SC Freiburg as they went on the road and secured a 1-1 draw against Red Bull Leipzig.  Freiburg scored their goal in the first half off of weird deflection off of a low corner kick in the 34th minute.  Nevertheless, Leipzig continued to attack relentlessly as they tied the match up in the 77th minute on a Yussuf Poulsen header off of a cross.  Freiburg withstood the attack as they were out shot 22-8 by Leipzig.  This loss damaged Red Bull Leipzig’s chances at winning the regular season title as they dropped back to 4th place.

Hertha Berlin also went on the road and smashed TSG Hoffenheim 3-0.  All three goals were scored in the second half by Berlin.  This win was important for Hertha Berlin because they are now eight points away from the relegation zone.

Fortuna Dusseldorf and SC Paderborn 07 played to a 0-0 draw.  I will not post the video for this match because both teams only had one shot on goal.  That probably explains why both teams remain in the relegation zone.

The biggest match of the day was the Revierderby with Borussia Dortmund at home against Schalke 04.  However, only Dortmund showed up to win with a 4-0 victory.  The win now moves Dortmund all the way up to second place.

VfL Wolfsburg avoid a road upset by grabbing a goal in the last minute by Daniel Ginczek to win 2-1 at FC Augsburg.  The win jumped Wolfsburg up to sixth place, while Augsburg is now only four points away from the relegation zone.

In the final match of the day, Borussia Monchengladbach cruised to an easy 3-1 road win over Eintracht Frankfurt.  Monchengladbach were glad to be back playing in the Bundesliga because Alassane Plea scored 35 seconds after the opening whistle.  Monchengladbach jumped up to third place while Frankfurt remains five points outside of the relegation zone.

The Bundesliga will be back with a doubleheader on Sunday.
