Scientists find the largest and oldest structure in the universe generated after the Big Bang

It is the “most gigantic” structure that has been found in such an early stage of the universe, “2,000 million years after the Big Bang,” according to astronomers.

A group of scientists  has  recently discovered the largest known structure in the ancient universe.

It is an object called a supercluster. As explained by the Space portal , we also reside in a supercluster: our planet is in the galaxy of the Milky Way, which in turn is a member of  a gathering of nearby galaxies called the  Virgo supercluster , which is part of an even larger supercluster called Laniakea

An astronomical team led by Olga Cucciati, of the National Institute of Astrophysics in Bologna (Italy), now found a massive supercluster of the early universe. This proto-supercluster, which Cucciati’s team called Hyperion, is “the most gigantic structure” that was found at such an early stage of the formation of the universe, ” 2,000 million years after the Big Bang, ” according to a statement  published  by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

The team found this enormous structure by analyzing the existing data from the VIMOS instrument at ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and the observations from the Telescope on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Experts estimate that Hyperion has  a huge mass 1 trillion times larger than the Sun  in our galaxy. “This is the first time that such a large structure has been identified, just over 2,000 million years after the Big Bang,” Cucciati said in the statement.

According to the expert, these types of structures are usually discovered when “the universe has had much more time to evolve and build such enormous things”. “It was a surprise to see something that  evolved when the universe was relatively young, ” Cucciati said.
