The Northern Forest Heritage Park is considered to be a “working forest.” It is located along the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire, In the mid-19th and early-20th century this was a major area in the logging and paper industry. There was a large supply of trees and the river provided the necessary water power for the sawmills.

Immigrants from European countries like Norway, Ireland, Russia, and Italy worked the mills. Efforts were also made to keep the forest growing while the logging and paper industry boomed. This included establishing the first industrial forestry program in the U.S.
