Orwell believed, and Goldstein wrote;
” …a hierarchical society was only possible on a basis of poverty and ignorance. ..”
It was the odd thought, contained in Goldstein’s forbidden book that it was not wise to keep the masses in poverty by restricting the output of goods, goods would be produced, but destroyed in war.. Economies were allowed to stagnate, much of the population kept half alive by State charity.
War was for destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labour.
War were to destroy what would make the masses too comfortable.
The goal was to have the people struggle to survive, struggle to obtain simple products, their minds distracted from reality.
I believe I did not even read this book the first time around. War is not good at all and here it is not about goods or products but about getting rid of people.
This book is one of the most important ever written, it exposes a lot of political back room dealing. A lot of the lies and tricks we see today. Further, it has predicted much of what we experienced since WWII
Jaylar,
I remember it, but, I do not know why I never read it. I have seen how politics can be very corrupt.
1984 shows you how people are manipulated by their governments. In the book there is the 2 + 2 = 5…. which is reflected in the first major lie of the US President… that he had more people at his inauguration than Obama… but the photos showed he had less than 1/3rd.
His toe cleaner spoke of ‘Alternate Facts’ something from 1984
