When the summer arrives, all we want is to stay outdoors as much as we can to enjoy the sun and warm breeze of the summer nights. For all of us that live in a crowded city, the only part of our homes that can offer us a little bit of sunshine, is the balcony.
Usually, balcony areas are small and difficult to organize and decorate. As a former resident in an apartment with a small balcony, I remember the challenge that I faced to make it a pleasant place and a seating area. After years of being a garbage disposal part of my apartment, I made my balcony a very nice place. The only thing that was bothering me were the flowers/ plants. I couldn’t find plants that could survive endless winter and sunny, dry summer, (ok, also I am not someone that is consistent in taking care of flowers) so I decided to go for plastic flowers and plants. It sounds ugly, but actually nowadays there are some pretty “fake” plants that actually look real. And, also little bit expensive, but it was worth it. Another thing that bothered me was the concrete floor. The decking pallets (even those in IKEA) are a bit expensive, and since it was a rented apartment, I didn’t want to invest in something that will need to be left there or trashed after moving. So, the artificial grass carpet was a brilliant idea. Be careful though, if you have an open roof terrace, since the carpet is not really water resistant. And, at last, something that I want to do in the near future, a vertical garden like this.
