Paintings are hanged on the wall at the level of the eyes, slightly sloping (this reduces reflections). In the dining room or in the kitchen, it is better to hang a picture at the level of the seated person’s eyes. The modern apartment is usually furnished with standard furniture, which is very well suited for paintings of different styles. However, not every painting will fit in the apartment where the antique furniture reigns in the interior. Illumination is very important for a good perception of the picture. The direct sunlight should not fall on the picture, they will erode the colors. In addition, falling reflections on a glossy or dimmed surface prevents the image from being seen well.  For the pictures, the best is the good lighting of the whole room, but some pictures may require additional lighting. Luminaries must be positioned so that the light will evenly fall on the picture and avoid reflections and shadows. Halogen lamps, especially when the image is small, create a directional light stream that does not distort the color of the image.

Hanging a picture on a wall located on one side of the window, you will see all the stains and roughs, all the subtleties of the painter’s painting technique. Such illumination of the paintings is only suitable for those paintings that the author also illuminated his model from the side. For extra valuable works, install two additional light sources to illuminate the picture from above and from the side. If several pictures hang on one wall, it would be more convenient to hang them on one common holder or on cords, which are attached to the two upper corners of the painting.

If the wall is large and the paintings are small, it is best to group them in groups that would be the most desired painting for you in the center. The group must consist from paintings of a similar style, theme and color.

It should be borne in mind that when hanging three pictures, the main one is in the middle – it draws the most attention. For the same size images, the simplest way of hanging is one line, the same distance from each other.

Some paintings, mostly artistic works of the old classical technique with massive frames, cannot be put into the shade with furniture or other works of art – such paintings on the wall require a lot of space.

Close one to another hanged paintings a bit overshadow each other. If you want to hang two pictures of different sizes, hang them horizontally so that the larger picture is slightly higher than the lower one.

It may happen that two pictures look amazing while hanging separately, and together they will not fit together. But if you have a really significant collection, just try to arrange the works of art so that large paintings do not put into the shade the space for small pictures and that the background between them would remains blank.

In a small room you should hang the paintings of the same theme. Horizontal paintings look good over the sofa, beds, chests of drawers, etc., while the vertical ones on the narrow wall. Hanging the picture above the furniture it should not be wider than the furniture itself. The general principle – the painting should not be bigger than 75% the width of the furniture.

The best background for any picture is the one-color wall. Depending on the color of the walls and whether it is bright, the paintings in their backdrop will look completely different.

By the way, if you burn a fireplace regularly, the soot will gradually accumulate over the surface of the hanging paintings.
