Spring clean yourself: Home remedies for easy detox

Aah! So the winter chills are gone and we are basking in the March sun. It’s springtime people! It’s my favorite time of the year. A little makeover of the house, do a whole lot of cleaning and get my garden to all bloom and glow. However, this season is also a little tricky for our body. Transcending from harsh cold months to warm sunny days, we often fall sick with flu, allergies and pollen infections.

So, while you welcome the season with open arms, it’s also time to spring clean yourself, so your body can also enjoy the weather out there. Here’s my few favorite detox ideas, much-needed for this season!

And, guess what? Detoxifying drinks don’t have to be tasteless or unpleasant to your palate. Rather, you can easily have these as your daily drinks, along with your regular diet.

Cilantro & Mint Juice

Cilantro or coriander and mint are both cooling herbs as well as great antiseptics for the body. And, of course they are great additions to any dish.

Blend a bunch of coriander/cilantro and a handful of mint leaves. Add the juice of 1 lemon, sea-salt and a pinch of black pepper to add some punch. Drink it up before meals or just as juice in between meals. For more effective results, it’s good to have this empty stomach.

Spinach & Tomato Juice

This was a new discovery from my yoga teacher. She recommends that you have it when you are at home, since spinach gets oxidized when left to air for a while.

Blend a whole tomato and 4-5 leaves of spinach, with a little water. Add lemon juice and a pinch of black salt to taste. This is optional though. Drinking it on an empty stomach helps reduce water retention, cleanses the bowels and boosts metabolism. Add celery to the taste of virgin Bloody Mary!

Cumin, Coriander & Fennel tea

<a href="https://www.pexels.com/search/tea/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Source</a>

Cumin and fennel seeds are known for their digestive properties. I started doing this for a month now and it helps a lot in reducing bloating, increasing metabolism and its kind of calming for your body.

Boil half a teaspoon of cumin seeds, half teaspoon of fennel and half a teaspoon of coriander seeds in 2 cups of water. Let it steep for a few minutes. Add a dash of lemon for a refreshing taste. Strain and drink it as a tea in the afternoon or before going to bed. You can dry grind these seeds in equal proportions and store it in a jar for a quick use.

Cucumber and mint juice

Like cilantro, cucumber is also a great diuretic, coolant and of course, refreshing to the palate. And as the seasonal heat start to set in, cucumber keeps your body hydrates. Blend 1 whole cucumber (I usually take 2 if its gherkins) with a handful of mint leaves. Add sea-salt and pepper to taste. You can also add lemon or cilantro leaves to make  it more like an afternoon drink.

Fruit Water

Most of us do it from time to time but if we make a practice of drinking fruit water on a daily basis starting these months, it can be really good for your body. Slice up seasonal fruits (make sure you are allowed to eat all of those) orange, lemon, grapefruit, strawberry, peaches etc. Fill a pitcher with water (not cold) and soak all the fruits. Keep it refrigerated. You can drink this throughout the day and as a replacement for any aerated or artificial drinks. The enzymes from fruit help indigestion and vitamin C is always a good immunity booster during the weather change.

There are more detox drinks you can make at home and without any hassle- like aloe vera, celery, parsley and similar others. As a foodie, my primary concern is always the taste. Whatever I eat or drink has to be good on my taste buds and if its good for the body too, then I think we are doing it right!
