Few people are surprised to find out that homemade food is nearly always better tasting and is healthier than store-bought packaged equivalents. What many people don’t realize, though, is that there are very few packaged foods that can’t be made at home, from scratch. That includes rice krispie or rice crispy cereal.
For the best health aspects, use quality ingredients. You can save money if you just use whatever is cheapest, but the flavor and health are sacrificed if you do.
Ingredients:
Cooked rice
Quality oil (Coconut, Peanut, Etc)
Instructions:
1. Spread the rice out onto cookie sheets in a thin layer. It is best to keep the layer less than a quarter-inch thick, so the amount of rice you fix can be adjusted by the cookie sheets you have on hand.
2. Bake the rice at 275 degrees for 2 hours, then take it out of the oven and allow it to completely cool.
3. Heat the oil in a pot to at least a depth of an inch. The oil should be about 375 degrees.
4. The rice should be stuck together, so break it into pieces that are about an inch big. Brown the rice chunks in the hot oil; about 45 seconds to a minute each. They should sizzle and pop. Then remove these and place on paper towels to absorb the excess oil and allow them to cool down completely.
5. Carefully break the deep-fried pieces into individual kernels. Store the homemade rice crispies in an airtight container. This rice crispy cereal can be used any way that the store-bought version can be, including in rice crispy treats. You control how healthy they are and what goes into them, though.
Sure, it is a whole lot simpler to just buy the store brand and accept all the additives the manufacturers put in the cereal, including those you don’t even know about. However, making your own isn’t difficult, though it is somewhat time-consuming. The finished product tastes better and is far healthier. In fact, this is a great way to use leftover rice, as well. Quality rice makes the best rice crispies, though, and brown rice actually yields an inferior end product.
That is interesting. Never knew you could do this at home. I am not a cereal lover but this recipe can be used for some delicious casserole toppings.
Absolutely, it can be. Depending on the oil that is used, this can even be made in a way that people who are on a keto diet can eat it. As a topping for casseroles, the flavor is much better than what is bought in stores. The only downside is really just the amount of time that it takes. It is quite simple to do, otherwise.
It looks delicious, and easy to make too. =)
Yes. Although it is a little time-consuming, it is actually easy to make.
