Black Walnut Cookies

Some say that black walnuts are an acqiured taste, they may be, I know that I do enjoy black walnut cookies!

Picking your own black walnuts can be a tiring task and you will require a hammer and a stump to break them open and a nut pick to dig out the goody, but its well worth the trouble. Just be sure to wear gloves so that you do not turn your hands black.

If you are not into busting open black walnuts and picking you can buy them already cleaned at the super market. I will buy a bag if I cannot get fresh nuts.

Here is what you will need to make these delicious cookies :

1/2 cup of shortening

3/4 cup of white sugar

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

2 cups of self rising flour

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1/2 cup of Daisy brand sour cream

1/2 cup chopped black walnuts

Preheat oven to 375°.

Cream together the shortening and sugar until fluffy, mix in egg and vanilla.

Mix cinnamon and flour together and add slowly to the creamed mixture, while alternately adding the sour cream.

Add black walnuts and mix.

Drop by teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet. Press flat with the bottom of a glass, sprinkle top of cookie with sugar.

Bake for around 10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on racks.

Makes 4 1/2 dozen.

Although I bake cookies all the time, this is always “a special” cookie for me to bake when someone drops by with a load of black walnuts fresh off the tree.

If you want to make black walnut cookies for Christmas just use green or red sugar crystals instead of white sugar.

To serve black walnut cookies at a party simply set several out on small serving dishes with a spoon full of Applesauce. The combination is fabulous!
