Town of Elin Pelin, National Festival of Masquerade Games

There is a tradition in Bulgaria – in the middle of winter there are Kuker games that chase away evil forces.

Kuker groups are involved, usually young men who are covered in scary masks.

These masks are made almost all year long from various materials – usually leather, feathers and wood.

I know that in other countries there are similar carnivals.

Years ago, I was in Basel, Switzerland, where I saw similar carnival masks in an establishment.
