I, TONYA (2017) movie review and analysis

Saturday, December 23, 2017

At 1 pm, I decided to go to the movie theater across the street to watch the movie, I Tonya. I have always liked watching figure skating on TV because ice skating is so fun. I have never really followed either skater, Tonya Harding or Nancy Kerrigan because I preferred the performances of other skaters, such as Katarina Witt, Oksana Baiul, and some Russian skaters. But I am just familiar with Tonya and Nancy from that stupid incident that happened during the Olympics. I thought the whole thing was a big mess as well as there was more to it than the media was saying. The Zionist Media often likes to run with it and make situations more than they are by over-dramatizing certain events. But this movie tells the story in a comedic way because it is very blunt.

The movie was entertaining because it was like an uncut in-your-face documentary, but played by actors as the real people that were somehow involved in the incident. Certain characters were interviewed by someone because the characters appeared to be talking to you on the screen, before a particular scene that described their version of the truth. It appears to be honest because Tonya and her dysfunctional family were described as redneck white trash to depict Tonya’s hard life, which started with the abuse from her mother and continued with the abuse from her first husband, Jeff Gillolly. It also described the bais in the media and skating panel because Tonya felt that her scores were lower than she deserved because she doesn’t have the sweet and wholesome appearance. Therefore, she often got low presentation scores because of her appearance, which affected her overall score.

According to the film, the mastermind appears to be Jeff’s friend, Shawn Eckhardt, who started this whole mess with sending letters to Nancy Kerrigan in order to scare her and mess with her head. But Shawn took it further, upgrading the harassment with hiring hitmen Shane Stant and Derrick Smith to perform the knee-whacking incident, although Jeff was portrayed as a smooth-talker and conman.

In the movie, Tonya Harding is played by Margot Robbie and Jeff Gillooly is played by Sebastian Stan. Tonya’s mother, LaVona Golden, is played by Allison Janney. Shawn Eckhardt is played by Paul Walter Hauser. There were also occasional TV news clips of the actual people.

I think the actors did a good job portraying the actual people, but Margot Robbie looked much older and taller than Tonya Harding. Actually, Margot Robbie looked more like Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Aileen Wuornos in Monster.
