This solution comes from my 10 year old son and I think this the biggest possible number 8118. You can get this number by removing top and bottom match sticks of 0. Convert first digit to 8, then you get 8118.
I suppose you could cheat a bit by converting the 5 to a 9 with one match, then doubling up somewhere else with the second – you’d get 9118 that way!

My older son says you can make 51181 by removing top and bottom match sticks of 0 and making a 1 at the end. 🙂

999 and they should all look the same. Take lower left matches from 0 and 8 and use them to make 999.
I got 989 too!
You can get 989. Take two matches off the 8 – bottom and bottom left. Use one to change 0 to 8 and the other to change 5 to 9. The two 9s will not be identical, but does that matter?
