The Battle of Kosovo (June 28, 1389.)

The date of the Kosovo Battle consists of numbers that have been deeply engraved in the collective consciousness of the Serbian people. On June 28, 1389, on the great Serbian religious holiday Vidovdan, Prince Lazar and a large part of his army died in Gazimestan near Prishtina, defending their country from the Turkish uprising.

In the time of Lazar’s predecessors, Nemanjic, the Serbian state was very strong. After the sudden death of Dusan Nemanjić, and then Prince Uros , she became very vulnerable. Due to internal struggles, the Dushan Empire was disbanded and threatened by external threats from Turkey and Hungary. Lazar Hrebeljanovic, who was a prominent nobleman, was amply strengthened military and economic, and in such a situation he distinguished himself among the Serbian nobility and began to be regarded as the “Prince of Serbia”. In addition, Lazar was married to Milica, who originated from the Nemanjic dynasty.

At the end of the eighties of the 14th century, the Turks often organized incursions into the Sharr Mountain region (now Macedonia), and in 1386 they succeeded in conquering Nish. Still, the Turks experienced losses. Several of the lost battles forced Sultan Murat to serious preparations for the battle with the Serbs.

The seriousness of the fight is borne out by the fact that both rulers came personally to the Kosovo field in which the decisive battle was scheduled. Murat came to Kosovo with both his sons, Bajazit and Jakup.

In the first phase of the battle, the Serbian army was more successful.Sultan Murat was killed by the hero of Milosh Obilic. After Murat’s death, his son Bajazit kills his brother Jakup to secure the throne. His army in the center of Lazarus’ forces breaks down their resistance. On that occasion he caught Lazarus and cut off his head.It is believed that Bajazit was afraid that he would  lose his throne and more losses in the army, so he ended the fight and returned to Turkey.

For the battle itself and its actors, there are many legends. To date, the Kosovo battle has remained inspirational, because Lazar’s death has always been perceived as a great victim to preserve national and state freedom that should serve as an example for future generations.

Without Lazarus and without the army, the country was left  with woman on the throne and with still unmarried Lazarevo male children. The Serbian throne, after the age of majority, was succeeded by Lazar’s son Stephen Lazarevic, who was aware of his weaknesses, and led a wise policy like the Turkish Vasal. Oliverа, the daughter of Lazarus, married for Bajazit. In return, Bajazit defends Serbia from Hungary. After Bajazit’s death, Serbia is no longer a Turkish vassal.Much later, after two lesser battles, the Turks finally took the remains of Serbia in 1459.
