The Battle of Neretva (beginning of 1943) is the most humanitarian armed struggle for man and is an example of humanity and ethics towards wounded fellow men.According to Hitler’s personal order, the German generals began implementing the “Weiss” plan in order to destroy the partisan units in Bosnia (ex Yugoslavia). The Partisans with the Supreme Headquarters and 4,500 wounded men were surrounded in the valley of the Neretva River. There was only one bridge left, on whose other side there were strong hostile forces, preparing for the massacre of wounded fighters and helpless people. Tito orders the destruction of the bridge. The surprised enemy shifts his forces to the other side, predicting that the Partisans will try to suicidal breach. However, during only one night, the Partisans build a new bridge next to the demolished and transfer to the other side, defeating the enemy.

Based on this event, the most ambitious film of the former Yugoslavia was recorded. The world’s biggest stars of that time Jul Briner, Franco Nero, Sergej Bondarchuk, Silva Koshcina, Kurd Jirgens and the great Orson Wales joined the actor’s legends of the region, and the poster for him was drawn by none other than Pablo Picasso.

Picasso said he did not want money for his work, but in return asked for the box of the best Yugoslav wine in which there were 12 bottles.

The film “The Battle of Neretva” is considered to be the best and most expensive film that was filmed in Yugoslavia. The film achieved great international success, won numerous awards, and was nominated for the Oscar.At the premiere of the film held on November 29, 1969 at the opening of the Sarajevo Cultural and Sports Center Skenderija. In addition to Tito and the film crew, Sophia Loren and Omar Sharif were also present.

In June 2010, at the 32nd International Film Festival in Moscow, in the competition of 120 films of world cinema, he was included in the ten most important films about World War II.
