Nightly Ritual

source

I live in a very small community. The cemetery is across the road and down just a small distance.  There had been a local veteran that comes to the cemetery every evening just as the sunsets and plays taps. He had been doing it at least 20 years. Not many people heard it. We guessed maybe 12 homes were able to hear it on a good evening. I heard it every night.

His funeral was yesterday. I was so sad that we would no longer hear those beautiful tones at night.

Last evening a young man showed up at sundown and played taps. I went over to thank him. He said that he would get better and he was taking the place for his great grandfather. I was touched and pleased. He is seven years old.

Traditions matter.

  1. What a wonderful and touching story. That little boy sure loved his great grandfather. I believe that when people pass they might now and then be able to return to do something they really loved. Do not be surprised some full moon night round about midnight to hear the sounds of taps….

  2. I’ve never heard of people playing taps in a cemetery, is that normal over there? ?
Genetics and traditions work like keys to immortality. This veteran is still alive thanks to his great grandson, that plays in his name. Death is a stage, not the end, I believe. That’s the proof.
That’s surely a special family. I never got to meet my great grandparents, thankfully I have some pictures of them. I would have loved to have more, such as journals, but I’m grateful for the pictures. You were lucky you got access to your grandmothers’ journals, and crafts. ?
