Jamaican Sayings – 2

Old Firestick easy to Catch

This statement refers to the fact that it is easier to light dry wood than green.

The last time I heard it said was a few decades ago. I was standing in a shop in deep country, waiting to be served. The Widow was simpering because the Manager was flirting with her.

Miss Maggie, who was next to me said it softly,

“ahh eee…. ole firesick easy fi ketch'”.

Those around us gave her a glance and nodded turning back to watch the  ‘show’.

Miss Maggie had said it to indicate the behaviour of the Widow was ripe for involvement with the Manager.

It is a term often used to indicate that a person who had already been in a relationship is more likely to be available for a new relationship.
