This series is called remnants. Remnants of the summer’s garden scatter across the lawn like pages in a scrapbook. Every strand of rotting fleshy stem and each dried up seed will shape tomorrow’s garden.
The Gardener only makes introductions to the soil. I amend the soil, clean away the weeds in hopes of leveling the playing field and arrange the seeds and small plants but the garden is a living breathing organism that will grow out of even the most attentive restraints.
This summer I hope to spend more time outside tending, more time cleaning and keeping it from growing unkempt. Discipline keeps weeds growing where they have purpose, yes many weeds have purpose, and this year I hope to have more presence and more time and attention to building a garden that even the neighbors will appreciate.
Remnants is important because it is a point in time where I have continued to push farther beyond the obvious. There are so many shapes and colors that I have to seek and find, using every ounce of my creativity to see the extraordinary out of the mundane.
I am sure you will find more than you hoped for, I wish you luck.
