Intelligence Quotient – 21

When it comes to I.Q. tests, the cultural bias needs to be exposed.  For example, depending on where you live in the world, the term “Moor”  means different things.

I’ve seen Americans use it as a kind of synonym for oppressed Africans in America.

However, in the West Indies, Moors are considered fearsome pirates, and many organisations were created to redeem those captured by them.

If an Exam had a question:

Moors are:

a) another term for Africans

b) Powerful Seafarers

to answer a) would be ‘correct’  if an America had sat and was marking the paper.  But the answer, in other parts of the world is b),

    • Most I.Q tests have a cultural bias. The view of Moors is remarkably different whether you are in Jamaica or Florida. For us, they were powerful and dangerous.
