As Sandy went over the years she spent with Nick, she could see exactly how he manipulated her. She could virtually chart how he tried to destroy her sense of self. It was suddenly so clear how he abused her.
By analysing the relationship, Sandy could see the progression. How, when his ability to make her cry failed, he tried to use intellectual abuse. How, she, being smarter than he was, this failed.
She saw how his behaviour had caused her to become dishonest. If she wanted to watch television she would have to act as if she didn’t. If she wanted to eat Italian food, she would say Chinese.
She could recall how she had ‘tricked’ him into going to a function by claiming that she wasn’t interested.
Good to know of anyone who is living after abuse.
The problem is that many women do not analyse what happened, how and why and what. Once you do, you can see the patterns.
