Along with lifestyle changes, there are medications to help treat gout. The following drugs are among those used to treat this disease:

– NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

– Corticosteroids (powerful anti-inflammatory hormones)

– Colchicine (oral drug used for treating acute gout); it is useful in suppressing inflammation caused by this disease

– Allopurinol (uric acid-lowering drug)

– Probenecid, (oral drug used for reducing blood uric acid levels in patients with hyperuricemia)

– Sulfinpyrazone (it helps prevent attacks)

– Analgesics (pain relievers)

Patients generally start to improve after a few hours of treatment, and the attack disappears within a few days.

Eating right, and avoiding foods which may provoke an attack, is an important part of gout treatment.

Rest and applications of ice can help reduce inflammation associated with this disease.

It is important to maintain adequate fluid intake.

If you have symptoms which are associated with this disease consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
