Backstroke for Beginners

While we work on freestyle early in our swim program, some kids take to backstroke first.  When a child has a nice, relaxed back float, backstroke can come easily to them. Unlike freestyle, you don’t have to worry about timing your breathing. Backstroke follows a similar progression to freestyle: back floats, back glides, add kick, add arms, and work on the timing. Backstroke also helps the beginning swimmer gain confidence and improve their endurance.
