She is mad
raving
and openly a case
smiles for nothing
then cries
clothes tattered
dirt-blackened
awry haired
she smells a lot
cries are high and shrill
and often sobs abound
smiles are deeply ingrained
as if with the satisfaction she had died
then someone explained
her child died of hunger five year back
she smiles
with the image that hapless kid was fed to full
and she cries when she imagines
hunger killing him fast!
as it did finally!
Your work deserves a bigger platform.
This would be a good poem for a discussion session in a social work/human services course or even a graduate counseling course.
if you wish to use it then please do but do let me know and if you check the link the book there can make the saddest laugh I consider that as a bigger tool in social work
