2019 NFL Draft Review – Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars fell completely off the rails last season after having a good start.  Bringing in QB Nick Foles, the former quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles and a former Super Bowl MVP, gives the team renewed optimism that the Jags will be able to turn their season around.  Let’s check out who they drafted.

Round 1, Pick 7:  Josh Allen, DE/OLB, Kentucky.  6’5″, 262 lbs.  Allen will improve the defense immediately as he is able to help stop the run as well rush the passer.  He also can drop back in zone blitz packages so that the Jags defense will be able to diversify a defense that was rather predictable last season.

Round 2, Pick 3:  Jawaan Taylor, T, Florida.  6’5″, 312 lbs.  Taylor dropped into the second round as he played right tackle in college instead of protecting the blind side.  However, he will start right away and will make their offensive line even stronger in the running game.

Round 3, Pick 5:  Josh Oliver, TE, San Jose State.  6’5″, 249 lbs.  He should definitely grab some playing time as a receiving tight end.  He averaged over 4 catches a game so his play could open up the outside for the wide receivers.

Round 3, Pick 35:  Quincy Williams, S, Murray State.  5’11”, 225 lbs.  Williams played as a linebacker in college, but his spot could be at strong safety.  It may take him some time to learn a new position.

Round 5, Pick 2:  Ryquell Armstead, RB, Temple.  5’11”, 220 lbs.  Armstead will compete for a backup spot at running back behind Leonard Fournette.  He has a compact running style which allows for him to gain yards after contact.

Round 6, Pick 5:  Gardner Minshew, QB, Washington State.  6’1″, 225 lbs.  Minshew will be developed as either the third-string quarterback or placed on the practice squad.  Washington State was picked to finish next-to-last place in the Pac-12, but they almost won the conference.  His intangibles are very intriguing at the quarterback position.

Round 7, Pick 21:  Dontavius Russell, DT, Auburn.  6’3″, 319 lbs.  It would not be a Jacksonville draft without a defensive lineman being drafted.  The Jags could not stop the run at all last season, and Russell will be able to add some line depth so that their rush defense will be better than last season.

Grade:  The Jaguars really needed to draft a wide receiver.  I will give them a C-.
