While wandering around the grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, I finally came across the famous Jefferson Serpentine brick wall. I had read about it in obscure works on Jefferson, but here it stood finally. Jefferson had designed this wall around a little Cemetary so that it only used one brick thickness. To give it more strength, it was in a back and forth serpentine pattern as can be seen in the photos. Apparently this conserved expensive bricks and was as strong as a 2-3 layer thick brick wall.
This type of wall is also a creative piece of art. Think of the geometry that the servants had to use to build this fence.
It’s not a bad idea for the wall to be stronger,
At what time was it built?
Nice view of bricks wall.
Great super wall , thanks for sharing
