Summer is in the rearview mirror. The nights are growing longer as the temperatures are growing cooler. Our thoughts are turning from cookouts to tailgates. We’re longing for that first whiff of a warm slice of pumpkin pie, fresh from the oven. Yes, it’s autumn already. Time to get ready to cozy in for the colder months. But before winter, tackle these 5 fall DIY projects right now.
PLANT TREES
If you’ve been considering planting any trees in your yard, fall is a perfect time to do it. The still warm soil nurtures the root system, giving them a nice cozy place to dig in and get comfy before winter. There’s still plenty of long hours of daylight to allow to flourish.
CLEAR YOUR GUTTERS
For those who are fortunate enough to have shade trees to relax under all summer long, it’s time to get ready for those trees to shed their leaves for the season. Make sure your gutters are clear of debris, pine cones, bird nests, or other debris.
After you’ve cleared the gutters, add gutter guards to keep the impact of those fall leaves to a minimum. After all, wouldn’t you rather rake them into a big fluffy pile to jump into than scoop them out of a gutter?
GROW A FALL GARDEN
Gardening buffs love fall gardening. There are fewer mosquitoes, the humidity has dropped, and the temperatures are so perfect. It’s also the perfect time to grow quick-growing fall vegetables such as kale, brussels sprouts, or cabbage. You’ll have plenty of time to get these grown in time to share on the Thanksgiving Dinner table.
DECORATE YOUR FRONT PORCH
Take inspiration from those rich, glorious fall colors and decorate your front porch. Treat all those who pass your home to a lush and abundant fall display. Use nature-inspired hay bales, sunflowers, pumpkins, and gourds to greet your visitors. When September turns to October, work in some ghostly displays.
CLEAN OUT THE SHE-SHED
Take a Saturday afternoon and conquer the mess in your she-shed. All the little scraps you’ve been saving for crafting can get used or tossed. The broken hand tools that you’ve been meaning to fix need to be repaired. Haul out clutter and trash. Then, set yourself up a pretty little sitting area where you can enjoy a nice glass of Chardonnay…wrapped up in your favorite cozy sweater.
Happy fall, y’all!
