The Belgrade Zoo was opened on July 12, 1936. On July 12, 1936, the zoo was founded and opened by the Mayor Vlada Ilic from his own money and on his property. It is located in the center of the city, at the foot of the fortress Kalemegdan, in the area known as Mali Kalemegdan. It is the first zoo in Serbia, but also the most modern.
