Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell not returning in 2018

Boston Red Sox general manager Dave Dombrowski made the decision not to bring back John Farrell to manage his team in the 2018 Major League Baseball season.

Farrell who took over the managerial duties from Bobby Valentine in the 2013 Major League Baseball season led the Red Sox to win the 2013 World Series in his first year of managing the team.

However the Red Sox ended up in last place in the American League East Division in the 2014 and 2015 baseball seasons before leading the Red Sox to two American League Eastern Division titles before losing to the Cleveland Indians in the 2016 American League Division Series and the Houston Astros in the 2017 American League Division Series.

In my opinion it is unusual for a baseball manager to be terminated just for losing a playoff series or after the conclusion of a World Series but it is evident that Dombrowski decided to make a change in the manager position before the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season so Dombrowski can hire a manager that he can work with to push the Red Sox into World Series contention in the near future.

At least Farrell did manage the Red Sox for five seasons, winning one World Series title which will make him a candidate to land on his feet to either manage another team in the Major Leagues that needs a field manager like the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies who need a manager for their baseball teams before the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season.

My view is that the Janet Jackson song title “What You Have Done For Me Lately?” was the reason that Farrell was the fall guy for the failure of the Red Sox to be in the American League Championship Series this year.
