The Rooibos plant, pronounced “roy-boss”, is now 300 years old. It was popularized by the early tea- drinking Dutch settlers of South Africa in the 1700s as an alternative to the more expensive, imported black tea of the time. It evolved to commercial importance in the 1930s. Some of its uses are for cooking, as a beverage, as food flavoring and a cosmetic product additive. The tea is a herbal tea. Some of its benefits to human health include the following: controlling diabetes, improving the skin, and preventing kidney stones. One good thing about the tea is that it does not have the stimulant caffeine, therefore, it is good for those with insomnia. It is called the African red tea because of its reddish-brown color.
