Writings on the wall

This is an idiom that I had learned in grade school. An indication of the things to come can be described as the writings on the wall. When our country was in political turmoil in the 1970s, my cousin said that the writings on the wall are very clear that our president would declare Martial Law. True to his word, Martial was declared after a week.
