It was the ink and nib that we used while at school. It was not a convenient arrangement. There was always ink spilling that destroyed our books and also it would spell disaster if that happened during exams That happened to me and I had to write my exam all over again.
Ballpoint pens came in much later but we were not allowed to use them. We were allowed to use fountain pens much later.
I still have my fountain pen that I used to write my final exam.
