The Giant Coconut Crab

This monster is the largest land-based arthropod in the world. Why does it have to be so big? Apparently if you want to eat and what you eat are coconuts, you want to climb and get them fresh from the top of the tree. They drop them down to the ground, crack them open and have a feast. Seems like a lot of work.

Just how big is a giant coconut crab? Well they can live to be 30 years old so that gives them a long time to grow. They are considered full grown when they have a body length of about 16 inches and a leg span of three feet. However there are documented reports that say they have reached more than six feet across and weighing up to 30 pounds.
