In a tropical country like where we live, the windows should be screened for purposes of protection not only against insects but also against birds and animals. I cannot imagine an open window like in the picture without a screen. For sure there would be birds inside the room or worse, a cat would be prowling there.
In the olden days, insects like mosquitoes and flies are not prevalent and houses have no screen. When there are pesky insects, the people would fumigate the area by burning dry leaves and grass. The smoke would drive away the insects if not killed. But now that diseases like dengue is fatal that everyone is reminded not to be careless in leaving the windows and doors open to invite intruders. When the window is screened, there is ample protection so no more worries.
