I have seen three things about group clapping aka ovation.

that it can be a standing ovation when the feat performed/talk delivered is really EXCELLENT

that people clap out of force of the occasion that someone is called to address a group and a minimum courtesy requires you to acknowledge the speaker/performer

that human jealousy lurks behind-whether a courtesy or standing ovation
