As a southern sunset draws to a close and night wraps itself around the deck, up above the stars begin to show themselves. Out in the dark landscape set before you, first you’ll see one little star near the ground, then another flitting out of the hydrangea. Oh! Then there are five, seven, and quickly, more than you can count.
It’s time to site back and watch the mystery of these astonishing little creatures dancing before your eyes. They hold a secret that other bugs can only wish for and which causes children to believe in fairytales. As a kid one learned they were a marvel, an amazing sight to savor and quiet us at day’s end.
These stars of the bug world are called fireflies by some, lightening bugs by others. No matter which name you learn as a child it sticks for life, and watching their ballets is something you never forget. To have your own back yard filled with these little light beams is a wonder that will keep you mesmerized like nothing else.

Glowworms are something else though, as only the male glowworms( who cannot produce light) are able to fly. The females glow but are flightless. Unfortunately, fireflies, which I used to call lightning bugs and still sometimes do, do not live around here, but I love them so much I sometimes travel long distances to go where they do.
So sorry you do not have them where you live but I’m glad you get to see them sometimes. Thank you for adding info to this post!

What great memories. I was thinking of my childhood as I watched them a few nights ago in my backyard. Some things you never forget.
We called them lightning bugs.
I understand that lightening bugs is an American term and that England is the home of fireflies. 🙂
