I have mentioned in one forum about the potatoes and other tubers here that still have soil. One commented with surprise that the tubers there are always cleaned first before putting in the market for sale. So as to prove my point I am posting the picture of the potatoes that I saw in the market.
The vendor said that it is all right to wash the potatoes but it shortens the shelf life so they don’t wash it. Okay, I get the point. Now that is a valid reason why the potatoes are dirty.

The cheapest and best place to buy produce when I lived in Riga, Latvia was at the Central Market and the potatoes were brought to market just as they were having been dug out of the ground.
