In a foreign country we have been, there is always the standard fast food for the international food so that if the foreigner does not relish the native food then there is an alternative. Our style in sampling the food is to study well the ingredients and the way it is cooked. There is the advantage if the place has many English speakers. But like in Japan where English is rare, that would be a problem.
The dishes that are native to the country have their own distinct taste. An example is Japan where their favorite is the raw fish and the pork. If you don’t like those dishes then there are the vegetables and also the steak which is beef. But for the native dishes like sushi and sashimi, you need a strong set of taste buds for that.
