A Song That Will Make You Love the Xylophone (or the Vibraphone)

As a child I can remember if toddlers received a musical instrument as a gift, the two most popular “noisemakers” were either a toy piano or a toy xylophone.  They both made that tinkle tinkle sound.

Do you love to hear someone play the xylophone?   I do.  I think it’s a lovely instrument?  In many ways, it reminds me of the steel drum, an instrument that is very popular in the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

How do I know the steel drum is popular?  Well!  I have traveled around the USA to various airports and a few times, I have landed by plane in the Bahamas.  To contrast and compare, when I got off the plane in the US airports I don’t recall hearing music.  When I landed in the Bahamas, I distinctly remember hearing music as I walked through the area of the airport to pick up my luggage.

The musicians were playing the steel drums and singing a holiday tune, as it was Christmas time.  I recall thinking that the steel drums reminded me of sounds made by playing the xylophone.  If you enjoy listening to the xylophone, then you will love this music video.  The female vocalist is Randy Crawford and she has a voice like no other!  She doesn’t need instrumental musical accompaniment.  But if you back up her vocals with the right musicians you will not be disappointed in the performance.

NOTE:  The instrument you hear in the music video may not be an old school xylophone. It could be one of the modern keyboards with a vibraphone feature that (to me) sounds like the xylophone.  Either way, the sound reminds me of the xylophone and I happen to like xylophones.  So there!  LOL. Hope you enjoy the music!
