The ancient fortress Atanas in Byala, Varna region, Bulgaria /part 2/.
The central street was the busiest place in the city. There were shops, craft workshops, drinking establishments, and travelers’ inns.
The solemn processions that have begun and ended in the church have probably passed through this street. In the city of approximately 35 acres lived about 1,000 people.
In antiquity, the fortress guarded the local harbor. There are some finds of bronze and iron anchors.
The castle itself is situated on the Cape St. Atanas a height of more than 20 m. over Black Sea.
