The Los Angeles Chargers fell back to earth last season by missing the NFL playoffs by going 5-11 after being picked to be a playoff contender last season. All of a sudden, the Chargers are looking to reload after a disappointing season. Let’s take a look at who they picked in the NFL Draft.
Round 1, Pick 6: Justin Herbert – QB – Oregon (6’6″, 236 lbs). Herbert was picked to be the QB of the future based upon his size, his arm, and his athleticism. He may need some time before he starts in order to fine-tune his game.
Round 1, Pick 23: Kenneth Murray – LB – Oklahoma (6’2″, 241 lbs). Murray was the leader of the Sooners defense last season with 17 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 4 pass break-ups. This type of versatility means that he more than likely start immediately at an interior linebacker spot.
Round 4, Pick 6: Joshua Kelley – RB – UCLA (5’11”, 212 lbs). Kelley will be involved in the running back rotation as a back-up.
Round 5, Pick 5: Joe Reed – WR – Virginia (6’0″, 224 lbs). Reed adds even more depth to a loaded wide receiver group, but his major contribution to the Chargers will be as a returner. Reed had five kick returns for TD’s during his college career.
Round 6, Pick 7: Alohi Gilman – S – Notre Dame (5’10”, 201 lbs). Gilman adds depth to the safety position. He should also see some time as special teams as well.
Round 7, Pick 6: K.J. Hill – WR – Ohio State (6’0″, 196 lbs). Hill is a good possession receiver who can also return punts.
Grade: With only six picks in this draft, the Chargers had to hit on every pick. They improved the middle of their defense along with adding depth at the skill positions on offense. Plus, the Chargers are really looking to improve their return game after ranking 29th in return yards last season. I give them a B-.
