2019 NFL Draft Review: Los Angeles Chargers

Moving to Los Angeles definitely made things better for the Chargers as they went from being also-rans to being a conference contender in just one season.  Although the Chargers had a promising season, their playoff loss to the New England Patriots show that Los Angeles needed to strengthen some weaknesses that were exposed.  Let’s check out who they added in the National Football League (NFL) Draft.

Round 1, Pick 28:  Jerry Tillery, DT, Notre Dame.  6’6″, 295 lbs.  Tillery has the size to either play at either defensive tackle or at defensive end.  He has the ability to get into the backfield and to wreak havoc from time to time.  He also blocked a couple of kicks, so his play on special teams could also help Los Angeles win games by keeping points off of the board.

Round 2, Pick 28:  Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware.  6’0, 206 lbs.  Adderley adds depth to the secondary as he played at safety and at cornerback in college.  With his versatility, he could also contend for a starting spot.  Nevertheless, he should receive plenty of playing time.

Round 3, Pick 28:  Trey Pipkins, T, Sioux Falls.  6’6″, 309 lbs.  Pipkins will add depth to a steady offensive line.  He will have to make the adjustment to better competition in order to make an impact.

Round 4, Pick 28:  Drue Tranquill, LB, Notre Dame.  6’2″, 234 lbs.  Tranquill will add depth to the linebacking corps.  He could see time as a 3rd down linebacker as he is able to either rush the passer or to drop back in coverage.

Round 5, Pick 28:  Easton Stick, QB, North Dakota State.  6’1″, 224 lbs.  Stick will be developed as a backup QB.  He has the ability to create opportunities with his feet as well as with his arm.

Round 6, Pick 28:  Emeke Egbule, LB, Houston.  6’2″, 245 lbs.  The Chargers are looking for more versatility from their linebackers as his play is similar to the play of Tranquill.  Both LB’s have a good chance to make the team.

Round 7, Pick 28:  Cortez Broughton, DT, Cincinnati.  6’2″, 293 lbs.  Broughton will add even more defensive line depth up the middle.

Grade:  For a team that is on the cusp of reaching a Super Bowl, the organization did not make any draft-day trades in order to pick a player that could possibly make more of an impact.  I give the Chargers a C for not showing any urgency.
