2019 NBA Draft Review: Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies have decided to go into a full rebuild in the offseason after rookie power forward Jaren Jackson, Jr. proved that he could be the starting building block as the team looks to ascend again in the next decade.  However, the Grizzlies must find some pieces around him in order for the rebuild to be successful.  Let’s take a look at how Memphis picked in this most recent NBA Draft.

#2 Ja Morant – PG – Murray State.  6’3″, 170 lbs.  (24.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 10 apg, 36.3% 3-pt%)

Morant went from an freshman under-the-radar future prospect into an All-American last season for the Racers.  His athleticism, his passing ability, and his versatility ensures that he will start at point guard for the Grizzlies on opening night of this NBA season.  Having ten assists per game in college basketball is rare because younger players tend to play too selfish.  However, he diligently worked on making his teammates better on the court with spectacular passes.

He does have a couple of things that he needs to develop.  He averaged around five turnovers per game as well, which means that he needs to take care of the basketball more.  Also, he will need to add some weight to his frame because the NBA schedule is unrelenting.  Actually, these two weaknesses are intertwined because he will make less turnovers as he becomes stronger.  After he becomes accustomed to the NBA style of play, he should become a future All-Star.

#21 Brandon Clarke – PF – Gonzaga.  6’8″, 207 lbs.  (16.9 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 3.16 bpg)

Clarke was one of the best defenders in college basketball because of his jumping ability.  Blocking that many shots per game is outstanding.  He will have to work on his shooting range, but he will be a tremendous complement with Jaren Jackson, Jr. on the block.

Grade:  Memphis found two starters in this draft with tremendous potential.  The grade is an A.
