Stairs to the Abandoned C&NW Rosehill Cemetery Station, Chicago, Illinois (2018-10-06 13-18-20a)
The photo was taken at Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois (West Ridge/West Rogers Park). The stairs are located just outside the main Ravenswood entrance.
The stairs lead up to what used to be a train station run by the Chicago & North Western. They operated a special funeral car which would bring a casket to the cemetery. There it was put in a special building with an elevator which brought it down to ground level to be buried. That building is still extant. I thought I had a photo of it but, apparently, I don’t.
I used a Nikon Coolpix P7700 camera to take the photo and Luminar 2018 to do the post-processing. First, I straightened the image and cropped it very slightly. Then I used the RAW Develop filter to lower the exposure, highlights and whites and raise the contrast, shadows and clarity. I added the Accent-AI filter and used the Tone filter to lower the SmartTone. Then I increased the vibrance and used the HSL filter to raise the saturation and the luminence in the blues and aquas.

What a cool find, you can barely see the steps.
Thanks. I knew there was a station there at one time but I didn’t know about the stairs until I found them looking for something else.
That is a lovely photo, Gary. It looks a very interesting place to visit.
It is very nice. Besides the cemetery aspect, it’s a great birding spot.
Nice view of a station where the deceased would be laid to rest.
This entire cemetery is fascinating. There’s a huge section of Civil War soldiers buried there. Lot’s of famous people, also.
That sounds like a great stop to visit in Chicago.
If you are interested in cemeteries, Chicago has some great ones. Even more interesting than Rosehill is Graceland (no connection to Elvis). There are some very famous people buried there.
Thank you for sharing this information of the cemeteries in Chicago.
Well, whatever you did with your camera (sorry but I am useless when it comes to cameras) your picture is absolutely stunning. It is in its abandoned stage a more beautiful staircase than it was in its previous days what with all the overgrowth and vines. I really love this look…
Thank you very much. A lot of it is the post-processing. On this one I used Luminar 2018 which is very easy to work with and not expensive as this type of software goes.
Wow, I would not want to go there after dark.
They won’t let you into the cemetery after 4:00 pm but the stairs were right outside the gates.
I bet people sneak in, but I sure would not. Not going on the stairs either, not me!
I wouldn’t go on those stairs either but they are fenced off and, at 66, my fence climbing days are a thing of the past.
