Rereading Nineteen Eighty Four – Part III Chap 3 (1)

Winston’s torture continues, but as he has been ‘softened up’  it is not as painful.

O’Brien, his torturer, tells him that there are three stages for reintegration into society;  learning, understanding, acceptance and that Winston is ready for understanding.

As the torture had gone on for some indeterminable time, Winston has ‘learned’  how to avoid being shocked, he was not to show stupidity.

O’Brien says….

“…You have often wondered… why the Ministry of Love should expend so much time and trouble on you.”

How O’Brien can ‘read’ Winston’s thoughts should send up a red flag.  How would he know?  The fact is that part of the torture was to make Winston believe that O’Brien could.

” You have read… Goldstein’s book, or parts of it…Did it tell you anything that you did not know already?’
