O’Brien states;

The power of what O’Brien is telling Winston can be seen in today’s world where ‘reality’ is shaped and formed by those in power.
“…you assume that everyone else sees the same thing as you…reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else.”
This iteration of ‘reality’ tends to shock. It is similar to the ‘reality’ of ‘alternate facts’ which was admitted in 2017 but has always existed.
Previously, the admission of the manipulation of reality was hidden, so that those who were gullible or unable to fact check, would believe the current explanation while those who did not, could question.
Once the 1984 ‘alternate facts’ was admitted, the truth of what Orwell wrote explodes. “The Party” of 1984 “which is collective and immortal” defines reality.
” Whatever the Party holds to be the truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party.”
