This is a chapter in which Winston’s character is explored. His fears are revealed.
The various laws and rules and imprisonment of their culture is put aside for a time while Winston can Julia communicate with each other in a place without a telescreen. They feel alone and safe.
They taste real food that Julia stole from the Inner Party. They feel real.
They know they can not stay, they must be home before it gets totally dark, but want to stay as long as possible. They want to delay returning and reverting to the images they must maintain of themselves; the personas they have to present to society to fit in and stay safe.
